Signal Integrity & Metallization
Signal integrity and additive manufacturing, particularly metallization, are hot topics in PCB design and fabrication. PCB layouts are carefully engineered to achieve specific electrical and power performance targets.
Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.
March Madness
From the growing role of AI in design tools to the challenge of managing cumulative tolerances, these articles in this issue examine the technical details, design choices, and manufacturing considerations that determine whether a board works as intended.

Building on DesignCon’s 30th Anniversary Momentum
February 4, 2025 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
With three decades of technological advancements, DesignCon has established itself as a premier conference for electronics design. Susan Deffree, the group event coordinator, reflects on the event's rich history and the exciting developments for its 30th anniversary.
Marcy LaRont: Suzanne, tell me about the show's origin and how DesignCon has developed over the years. What's really exciting about this 30th year?
Suzanne Deffree: DesignCon started as a Hewlett Packard (HP) event focused on HP products and technologies and grew up through Hewlett Packard’s divisions and spin-offs. The HP group, which is now Keysight, contributed to a lot to DesignCon’s growth.
Originally, the show focused on interconnects, but it's grown to be everything that touches the chip on the board in any way. We've got semiconductors and microelectronics, we've got PCBs, and we've got interconnects—which are still very important. Test and measurement, of course, is also at that foundational level of every electronic device in our world—your iPhone, your refrigerator, your car, anything that's got electronics in it, starts at DesignCon.
LaRont: I just listened to the keynote speaker from NVIDIA, which was really interesting. What else did you plan for this year?
Deffree: We planned 15 conference tracks, our Chip Head Theater, and our daily keynotes. We've had panel discussions every afternoon and those were packed. We had one with over 200 people in it yesterday and that was amazing. We also had about 170 suppliers on the expo floor.
We also planned several events specifically to celebrate the 30th anniversary. We had a lounge on the expo floor where you could pick up an alumni ribbon to show off how long you've been affiliated with DesignCon. We also had a timeline on display showing the progress of 30 years of tech. It highlighted this chip or that testing technology. But then it also has bigger influences like the iPod or a space shuttle launch. Our tech is in those big events. Our tech made those advances possible. The engineers of DesignCon made all that possible.
We also did giveaways for the 30th anniversary, and had a fun scavenger hunt. We linked up with a few new partners; IEEE EMC had its Women In Engineering group on Thursday afternoon with three sessions, including a reception about career advancement. Everyone was invited; it wasn’t a women-only program.
LaRont: I attended some of the technical tracks today, and walked the show floor. It was very busy down there, and that’s great to see. What did you attendance numbers look like?
Deffree: I don't have official numbers, but I know we were up significantly in pre-registration and based on the floor attendance, it was a very good attendee year and a great experience, too.
LaRont: That's great. Congratulations on your 30th DesignCon event. Thank you for all you do.
Deffree: Marcy, it’s good to see you here. Thank you.

Punching Out: How Are the Big Boys in Electronics Doing?
05/12/2026 | Tom Kastner -- Column: Punching Out!Let’s see what the public companies are up to in the PCB and EMS industries. In North America, there are only a couple of publicly traded PCB companies: TTM Technologies and Firan Technology Group. On the EMS side, there are a few more: Flex, Jabil, Celestica, Sanmina,, Benchmark, Fabrinet, Kimball Electronics, Plexus Corp, Nortech Systems, and Key Tronic Corp. From an M&A standpoint, these public companies have been fairly quiet in the past five years. FTG completed two deals in 2022 (IMI and Holaday), Flex had three deals, Jabil had five deals, and Sanmina had one deal.
Target Condition: An Exploration of Flooding PCB Layers
04/02/2026 | Kelly Dack -- Column: Target ConditionThe concept of flooding PCB layers with copper has been around for so long, you’d think we’d have it mastered. We haven’t. (Oh, and by “we,” I mean design engineers and the software tools we depend on.) Years ago, PCB artwork was created by hand using light tables, with tape applied to Mylar. Signals were slow, traces were relatively wide, and high-current paths were simply “beefed up” with wider copper. Signal integrity wasn’t yet a driving concern. Today, solid return paths are fundamental to robust design. We understand the importance of continuous reference planes for signal integrity and EMI control.
The Right Approach: Reflections on 50 Years in the Business, Part 3
03/31/2026 | Steve Williams -- Column: The Right ApproachWaking up that first day in 2013 after being informed my position of 15 years had been eliminated, I realized that everything I had done in my career had positioned me for a new chapter. This included the hands-on leadership experience in PCB manufacturing, learning from over 1,000 global companies, and my industry exposure while working at Plexus. My passion for writing, educating, speaking, and passing along my experience to others made it clear that this was the time to pursue my dream job: owning a consulting company.
The Right Approach: Reflections on 50 Years in the Business, Part 2
03/11/2026 | Steve Williams -- Column: The Right ApproachIn 1998, I had just reunited with my high school sweetheart (now my wife) when my Dad, the vice president of Plexus, told me they were looking for a PCB commodity manager with subject matter expertise. I interviewed for the position and became the global PCB commodity manager for Plexus, which had been my largest customer. They would not have offered me the position without my undergraduate degree.
Growing an Engineer: Meet Emerging Engineer Julian Vega
02/25/2026 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007 MagazineJulian Vega started as a 17-year-old intern who rose to planning supervisor at Summit Interconnect in just seven years, and credits the Global Electronics Association’s Emerging Engineer program for fueling his passion and accelerating his career journey. In this interview, Julian shares how the program expanded his technical perspective, connected him with industry leaders, and helped shape his vision for the future.
