It’s Only Common Sense: Why Engineering Expertise Has Become the Ultimate Competitive Advantage
Companies in the electronics industry have always competed on the same familiar battlegrounds: Price, delivery, quality, and manufacturing capacity were the standards by which suppliers were measured. Those things are still important. In fact, they are expected, but they are no longer enough to separate one company from another.
The competitive landscape has changed, and so have customer expectations. Today's OEMs want more than a company that can simply build a PCB or assemble a complex electronic product. They are looking for partners that can help them solve engineering challenges before those challenges become expensive production problems. They want companies that contribute ideas, improve designs, reduce risk, and accelerate innovation. They want expertise every bit as much as they want manufacturing capacity.
That represents one of the biggest shifts our industry has experienced in decades.
Think about the products being designed today. AI hardware, advanced medical devices, autonomous vehicles, aerospace electronics, industrial automation, satellite communications, and next-generation defense systems are all becoming smaller, faster, and dramatically more complex. Every new generation of technology demands high density interconnections, tighter tolerances, improved thermal management, better signal integrity, and greater long-term reliability.
No engineer has all the answers anymore. The complexity has simply become too great, and that’s why engineering collaboration has become one of the most valuable services a manufacturer can provide.
The smartest manufacturers have figured out that their greatest contribution begins long before a purchase order arrives. It starts during design. When manufacturing engineers sit down with customer design teams early in the development process, remarkable things happen. Potential yield issues are identified before fabrication begins, materials are selected more intelligently, stackups are optimized, manufacturability improves, reliability increases, and costs often decrease because expensive redesigns are avoided.
Everyone wins because customers get better products, manufacturers build products more efficiently, and projects move to market faster. That kind of partnership creates value that extends far beyond the price of a board.
I have often said that the best salespeople are really problem solvers. The same principle applies to companies. Those that solve the most problems become the companies customers never want to replace.
That is a much stronger competitive position than simply offering the lowest quote.
Too many manufacturers still believe that once they receive the RFQ, the competition begins. Actually, it began months earlier when engineers were searching for technical information online, looking for answers to design questions. It might have even started when they attended a webinar, downloaded a white paper, watched a technical presentation, or read an educational article that helped them solve a difficult engineering problem.
By the time the RFQ is issued, many buying decisions have already started taking shape. The company that has been teaching, advising, and sharing practical expertise has already established credibility and trust without even having done a job yet.
Some companies hesitate to share their knowledge because they worry about giving away too much. I have never believed that. Teaching doesn't reduce your value. It demonstrates it.
Every technical article your engineers publish, case study you develop, design guide you make available, webinar you host, and every engineering question you answer publicly sends an important message to the marketplace: "We understand these challenges. We solve these problems every day. You can trust us."
If you think you’re the only one doing research, especially using AI, think again. Engineers conduct extensive research before contacting suppliers. Purchasing teams investigate manufacturing capabilities in great detail. Program managers compare technical resources as carefully as they compare pricing. Even AI systems can identify companies based on the quality, depth, and authority of the information they publish.
That last point deserves special attention, because large language models, AI-powered search platforms, and answer engines are changing how customers discover expertise. Instead of simply displaying websites ranked by keywords, these systems recommend companies that consistently provide useful, authoritative answers.
In other words, expertise is becoming searchable.
Companies that regularly publish educational content about PCB design, advanced packaging, thermal management, HDI technology, rigid-flex applications, materials, manufacturing processes, reliability engineering, and design for manufacturability are building digital authority that continues working around the clock.
Their engineers are teaching thousands of potential customers they may never meet in person, and that knowledge becomes part of the industry's collective learning.
When someone asks AI a technical question, those companies are far more likely to become part of the answer.
But what does that have to do with marketing?
Instead of constantly trying to interrupt customers with advertisements, leading manufacturers can attract customers by helping them become more successful.
Helping first has always been one of the strongest business strategies I know. It creates goodwill, confidence, and relationships. You’re not simply producing content. It really is about building trust, and over time, those answers become libraries of expertise and a competitive advantage, and it builds from there.
Those competitive advantages become preferred supplier relationships. Eventually, customers stop thinking of those manufacturers as vendors. They become indispensable engineering partners. That is exactly where every manufacturer should want to be.
As technology continues advancing, this trend will only accelerate. The need for experienced engineering partners will continue growing across every sector of electronics manufacturing.

I urge you to invest in engineering experts who write, speak, teach, and collaborate. Encourage them to create technical resources that answer real customer questions, and build cultures where solving problems matters as much as building products.
That’s something customers will notice. Common sense usually points us toward the obvious once we're willing to see it. If your customers are looking for solutions instead of suppliers, then become the company that solves their toughest engineering problems before anyone else even recognizes they exist.
