It’s Only Common Sense: AI Is Accelerating the Electronics Industry
Every time a new technology comes along, someone predicts the end of an industry. When automation arrived, people claimed manufacturing would disappear. When computers became commonplace, many believed they would replace engineers and eliminate countless jobs. Then came robotics, cloud computing, and digital transformation, each accompanied by warnings that people would soon become obsolete.
Now it’s AI’s turn, where every day there seems to be another headline predicting that AI will replace workers, eliminate entire professions, and fundamentally reshape the economy. While some of those predictions may contain a grain of truth, they completely miss what is happening in the electronics industry. From where I sit, AI is not replacing our industry. It is accelerating it.
That is an important distinction because instead of asking how AI will replace electronics manufacturing, we should be asking how electronics manufacturing will make AI possible. Simply, without advanced electronics, there is no AI.
Every large language model, intelligent robot, autonomous vehicle, medical diagnostic platform, industrial automation system, and AI-powered data center depends on sophisticated electronic hardware. Behind every breakthrough in AI is an extraordinary amount of engineering, semiconductor technology, advanced packaging, PCBs, interconnect solutions, thermal management, and precision manufacturing.
Software may receive the headlines, but hardware makes it all work, and that should give everyone in our industry tremendous confidence about the future.
Think about the enormous computing power required to train today's AI models. From faster processors to increasing memory requirements, data centers consume unprecedented amounts of electricity. Their cooling systems are more sophisticated, and signal integrity challenges become more demanding with every new generation of hardware.
All of these challenges increase the need for electronics manufacturers. Every improvement in AI creates another opportunity for companies capable of producing advanced PCBs, complex substrates, sophisticated electronic assemblies, and highly reliable packaging technologies.
The better AI becomes, the more advanced the hardware behind it must become, and if you know anything about me, you know that’s where I see opportunity.
Of course, AI is changing more than just the products we manufacture. It is also changing the way we work. The smartest companies have discovered that AI is one of the most valuable productivity tools they have ever adopted. Here are some examples:
AI helps engineers to accelerate research, evaluate design alternatives, identify potential reliability concerns, and shorten development cycles. Instead of spending hours searching technical references, they can begin with intelligent recommendations that help them reach better decisions more quickly.
Sales professionals are using AI to prepare customer presentations, analyze markets, identify emerging opportunities, and personalize communications. Rather than replacing the relationship-building skills that great salespeople possess, AI gives them more time to focus on customers because routine work is completed faster.
With AI systems, manufacturing organizations can improve scheduling, optimize production, predict maintenance requirements, analyze quality trends, strengthen supply chain visibility, and reduce waste. The result is higher productivity, better consistency, and faster response times.
Other departments benefit as well: Customer service teams can answer questions more quickly, and marketing departments create educational content that reaches customers wherever they search. It helps executive teams make better-informed strategic decisions by providing access to more robust analysis and deeper insights than ever before.
In each example, AI enhances the work rather than replacing the people. Engineer still engineers, the salesperson still sells, and so on. That is not replacement. It’s acceleration, and like every significant technological advancement before it, AI rewards those who choose to learn instead of fear.
Throughout my career, I have watched companies react to change in two very different ways. One group spends its time explaining why the new technology will never work. They hesitate, hoping things return to the way they used to be.
The other group gets curious, and starts asking better questions:
- How can this help our customers?
- How can this improve quality?
- How can this shorten lead times?
- How can this make our employees more successful?
- How can this help us innovate faster?
The organizations that embrace meaningful change almost always outperform those that resist it. While AI is revolutionary, it’s unlikely to be any different than other significant inventions.
However, another benefit I’ve noticed is that AI is helping companies share knowledge more effectively than ever before.
For years, many organizations struggled to capture the experience of their best engineers before retirement. Valuable knowledge often existed only inside someone's head. Today, companies can organize technical documentation, create searchable knowledge libraries, answer customer questions instantly, and preserve decades of engineering expertise in ways that make it available across the organization.
That is a tremendous competitive advantage. It also improves collaboration. Design and manufacturing engineers, quality specialists, suppliers, and customers can communicate more efficiently because information moves faster and becomes easier to access. When knowledge flows more freely, innovation follows, and that may be one of AI’s greatest contributions to our industry.
Remember, AI is not magic. It’s a tool, and like every powerful tool, its value depends entirely on the person using it. Give AI to a company with poor leadership, weak processes, and little customer focus, and those problems will still exist. Give AI to an organization committed to continuous improvement, technical excellence, customer service, and innovation, and it becomes a force multiplier.
Everything that makes your company great—leadership, culture, engineering, manufacturing, and customer relationships—still matters. AI does not replace those fundamentals. It helps exceptional organizations execute them even better.
Don’t fear AI. Instead, learn how to integrate it thoughtfully into every aspect of your business while investing in talented people, advanced manufacturing capabilities, and long-term customer relationships. That combination will be difficult to beat.
So, the next time you see another alarming headline predicting that AI is coming for your job, remember what is actually happening inside our industry. AI is creating enormous demand for the sophisticated electronics that only highly capable manufacturers can provide. At the same time, it is giving those manufacturers powerful new tools to innovate faster, operate more efficiently, and serve customers better than ever before.
That sounds less like a threat and far more like an opportunity.
It’s only common sense.
