The rapid expansion of AI data centers and high-performance computing is creating a new supply chain bottleneck, with printed circuit board (PCB) base materials becoming increasingly scarce worldwide, according to Würth Elektronik and STARTEAM GLOBAL.
While semiconductor shortages have dominated industry attention in recent years, demand for high-grade PCB laminates and other critical materials is now outpacing supply. AI server PCBs typically require three to five times more layers than conventional designs, significantly increasing consumption of advanced PCB materials.
In addition to copper-clad laminates (CCLs), supply constraints are affecting copper foils, prepregs, particularly PP1080 and PP2116, high-performance resins, and tungsten carbide used in drilling and routing tools. Industry experts do not expect meaningful relief in fiberglass fabric supply before 2028.
The shortages are contributing to higher material costs, longer lead times, reduced pricing visibility, and tighter allocation measures throughout the supply chain. As manufacturers commit production capacity through long-term agreements, flexibility to respond to short-term demand fluctuations continues to decline.
According to the companies, the market is shifting from one of material availability to one driven by allocation. Companies without long-term supplier relationships, reliable demand forecasts, or qualified alternative materials face increased costs and potential supply disruptions.
