Dan’s Biz Bookshelf: ‘The Soul of a New Machine’

07/09/2026 | Dan Beaulieu -- Column: Dan's Biz Bookshelf
Every once in a while, it's worth pulling an old book off the shelf to see if it still has something to teach us. That's exactly what I did recently with Tracy Kidder's Pulitzer Prize-winning "The Soul of a New Machine." I first read it more than 40 years ago when it was considered essential reading for anyone interested in technology and engineering. I wondered if it would still hold up after all these years. More importantly, I wanted to see how much the electronics industry had changed since the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Elementary, Mr. Watson: Builders of the Dream

07/02/2026 | John Watson -- Column: Elementary, Mr. Watson
In 1849, French writer, journalist, and satirist Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr wrote the famous line, “Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose,” which translates as “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” He penned it in his satirical journal, Les Guêpes (The Wasps), during a period of great upheaval in France.

Nolan’s Notes: The ROI of Setup Optimization

07/02/2026 | Nolan Johnson -- Column: Nolan's Notes
It was a comment from a guest at APEX EXPO last March that hit me. We were walking the show floor together and I was describing the major pieces of equipment, their functions, and the order of operation. When we stopped at a booth with robotic component towers, my guest commented, “So, everyone has one of these, right?” “Umm, no,” I said. “This is considered pretty sophisticated equipment. A lot of companies pick these parts from inventory by hand.” My guest, an industry outsider, said, “How do they tolerate all the time and human error?” That response, frankly, was rather devastating. She may have been new to the industry, but she sure knew a thing or two about manufacturing. I said to myself, “Is it really that obvious?”

Balancing Performance, Cost, and Reliability When Selecting a Cleaning Machine

06/24/2026 | Vladimir Sitko, PBT Works
Even the most advanced cleaning chemistry requires an effective delivery system, so selecting the appropriate cleaning machine is crucial. Cleaning equipment must do far more than simply wash boards. As assemblies move toward lower standoff heights, finer pitches, and increasingly complex geometries, the equipment must deliver chemistry into confined spaces, reliably remove contamination, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely, all while balancing throughput, operating costs, and long-term reliability requirements.
