Dan’s Biz Bookshelf: ‘The Soul of a New Machine’

07/09/2026 | Dan Beaulieu -- Column: Dan's Biz Bookshelf
Every once in a while, it's worth pulling an old book off the shelf to see if it still has something to teach us. That's exactly what I did recently with Tracy Kidder's Pulitzer Prize-winning "The Soul of a New Machine." I first read it more than 40 years ago when it was considered essential reading for anyone interested in technology and engineering. I wondered if it would still hold up after all these years. More importantly, I wanted to see how much the electronics industry had changed since the late 1970s and early 1980s.

It’s Only Common Sense: The Underrated Business Strategy of Joy

07/06/2026 | Dan Beaulieu -- Column: It's Only Common Sense
Somewhere along the way, businesses have become far too serious for its own good. We’ve started believing that exhaustion is proof of commitment, being stressed means importance, and that the more pressure we feel, the more productive we are. Entire workplaces have slowly lost their sense of fun, creativity, and humanity because our leaders became convinced that joy somehow distracts from performance instead of fueling it. I think that is one of the biggest mistakes modern companies make.

It’s Only Common Sense: Create Passion That Customers Feel

06/29/2026 | Dan Beaulieu -- Column: It's Only Common Sense
There’s something customers can feel almost immediately when they walk into a company, talk to a salesperson, visit a website, or spend five minutes with a leadership team: Passion. Just as importantly, they recognize when it’s missing. You’ve probably experienced this yourself. You walk into one business, and the people there seem emotionally asleep. Nobody makes eye contact. Conversations feel robotic. The energy in the room feels heavier than a Monday morning staff meeting after the coffee machine breaks.

Standard of Excellence: The Future of Fabrication—From Art to Automation

06/24/2026 | Anaya Vardya -- Column: Standard of Excellence
In the earliest days of PCB manufacturing, every build was part science, craftsmanship, and prayer. Veteran fabricators could smell a bad batch of laminate before it failed, sense a process drift before it showed up on a chart, and diagnose a plating problem by sight. That human intuition, the art of fabrication, was the foundation of our industry. The next generation of excellence is about magnifying the human touch through intelligent automation, data-driven control, and a digital mindset that ties every process, operator, and outcome together.

It’s Only Common Sense: Just Imagine…

06/22/2026 | Dan Beaulieu -- Column: It's Only Common Sense
There’s an old story that says we're all artists in first grade. Just ask a room full of 6-year-olds. One kid draws dinosaurs wearing sneakers. Another builds a spaceship out of cereal boxes and glue sticks. Somebody paints the sky green because they feel like it. Nobody apologizes for their ideas or worries about being judged. They just create without fear. But, as the story goes, we get older. We become more experienced and practical. We learn rules, structure, and how business is “supposed” to work. We slowly trade crayons for spreadsheets and imagination for caution. Little by little, we retire the most creative part of ourselves long before we retire from work.
