Current IssueIn Pursuit of Perfection: Defect Reduction
For bare PCB board fabrication, defect reduction is a critical aspect of a company's bottom line profitability. In this issue, we examine how imaging, etching, and plating processes can provide information and insight into reducing defects and increasing yields.
Voices of the Industry
We take the pulse of the PCB industry by sharing insights from leading fabricators and suppliers in this month's issue. We've gathered their thoughts on the new U.S. administration, spending, the war in Ukraine, and their most pressing needs. It’s an eye-opening and enlightening look behind the curtain.
The Essential Guide to Surface Finishes
We go back to basics this month with a recount of a little history, and look forward to addressing the many challenges that high density, high frequency, adhesion, SI, and corrosion concerns for harsh environments bring to the fore. We compare and contrast surface finishes by type and application, take a hard look at the many iterations of gold plating, and address palladium as a surface finish.

Neways Firmly Expands Defense Business
April 21, 2025 | NewaysEstimated reading time: 2 minutes
Neways Electronics, the global innovator in mission-critical electronics, foresees very strong growth in its defense-related activities in the near term. As a leading European provider of capabilities in the design and manufacturing of electronic modules, the company is ready to deploy its knowledge and industrial strength for a stronger European defense ecosystem.
Neways’ Board of Directors welcomes the approach taken by European governments and their ambitions in scaling up European Defense production. In its home country the Netherlands, Neways has expressed its commitment to help realize the recently announced roll out of the Netherlands Defense Technological Industrial Base (NLDTIB).
Neways has a long track record in the development and production of advanced electronic modules and has been active in the defense field for decades. It collaborates with renowned customers such as BAE Systems, KNDS, Rheinmetall, Saab and Thales. Neways’ production footprint spans the Netherlands, Germany, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Malaysia, among others. With a broad offering for innovations in aerospace, unmanned systems, ground-based systems, communications equipment and advanced radar systems, Neways can contribute directly to Dutch and European defense ambitions.
Within one organization, Neways offers advanced (clean room) assemblies, highly complex cable harnesses, microelectronics and even microchip “packaging” solutions. In addition, it has a large and broad-based team of engineers that can help customers with new designs or the rapid modification of existing designs. Neways facilities are equipped for “fast prototyping” solutions and have the capacity needed for rapid scale-up of production lines. All these capabilities can be perfectly used to develop and industrialize a wide range of defense-related systems and equipment.
Defense & Mobility
Because of the expected growth in defense activities, Neways is renaming its Smart Mobility business unit to Defense & Mobility. Neways’ defense activities already contribute substantially to 2025 sales and are expected to grow to several hundred million euros in the coming years. To be able to quickly respond to customer requests and rapidly scale up solutions, Neways has established a task force led by Chief Commercial Officer Michiel van der Maat, former vice chair of the Netherlands Defence and Security Industry body (NIDV), who has previously worked in various defense-related roles at Fokker Technologies.
Hans Büthker, CEO of Neways Electronics said, “We are proud that as a European company we can make a leading contribution to fulfilling the ambitions now set out in the Defense Strategy for Industry and Innovation, as well as to European defense-related product development and industrialization. The urgency is high and Neways wants to help where it can. There is a great need for an effective and sizeable Dutch and European defense industry given geopolitical developments, while capacity is often still low. In order to quickly industrially scale up the defense ecosystem, we connect with key market players and Ministries of Defense. We do this with our experience in the defense industry, combined with our innovation capability, our knowledge and the industrial scale we can offer. To our partners, Neways brings extensive experience with the industrial participation obligations involved in major European defense projects. We therefore believe we are uniquely positioned to be the leading electronics innovator and supplier in the defense sector in all the European countries we serve.”

Defense Speak Interpreted: Is There Still a CHIPS Act?
05/20/2025 | Dennis Fritz -- Column: Defense Speak InterpretedWhen I proposed my Defense Speak column topics for 2025 in February, there was a slight hint of doubt about the status of the CHIPS Act. But now? The CHIPS and Science Act is a multi-part $280 billion authorization by the U.S. Congress that President Biden signed into law on Aug. 9, 2022. Notice, I did not say appropriation. That’s because the actual appropriation was $52.7 billion.
