The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) released the following statement from SIA President and CEO Michael Robbins applauding the selection of GlobalFoundries to operate two new semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Malta, NY. The facilities are the first semiconductor projects under the U.S.-Japan Strategic Investment Initiative. The United States and Japan will jointly own the facilities.
“This landmark initiative is a major win for U.S.-based chip production and a testament to the strength of the U.S.-Japan partnership. This investment will expand critical semiconductor manufacturing capacity in the United States, support tens of thousands of jobs, and strengthen the supply chains that underpin U.S. economic and national security. By building on the complementary strengths of the United States and our allies, we can advance semiconductor innovation and manufacturing while meeting growing demand for chips in America and across the global economy. SIA commends GlobalFoundries, the Trump Administration, and the Japanese government for working diligently to enhance chip manufacturing capacity and supply chain resilience.”
The initial $10 billion investment will support the construction of a new fab, adding roughly 900,000 300mm wafers of annual U.S. manufacturing capacity when operational. A second investment of roughly $10 billion would support the construction of an additional fab, operating with similar production capabilities. Both fabs will be completely funded by Japan, made possible through President Trump’s U.S.-Japan Strategic Investment Initiative. GlobalFoundries plans to break ground on the first facility later this year.
