Nolan’s Notes: Automotive Is Gearing Up Again

10/04/2026 | Nolan Johnson -- Column: Nolan's Notes
In 2009, I bought a new car from the dealer, something a bit unusual for me, as I’ve tended to pick up a desirable, durable used car rather than betting on the reliability and panache of the latest model. Of the 12 vehicles I’ve purchased, only four were brand new. But back then, I needed something reliable to haul my family and all their stuff to meet the bus, get groceries, and go on the occasional weeklong camping trip.

Connect the Dots: What PCB Designers Should Know About Materials

09/10/2026 | Matt Stevenson -- Column: Connect the Dots
What questions does your manufacturer ask when they receive a design? I can tell you one: “How will we build this?” Every PCB design has specific parameters for elements such as impedance, thermal conductivity, and SI. Designers choose material properties based on the functionality requirements of the boards they design. Does the PCB have to operate in high heat? Be flexible enough to fit into a tiny device, such as a wearable? Maintain SI without distortion or data degradation?

Defense Speak Interpreted: Will Defense Become a Totally New Supplier for Drone Electronics?

08/04/2026 | Dennis Fritz -- Column: Defense Speak Interpreted
When I read recently that Tobyhanna Army Depot would begin manufacturing up to one million circuit cards annually for military drones, I immediately wondered whether this opens a whole new chapter of volume electronics manufacturing within Defense. Historically, Defense has had access to some aspect of printed circuit production. My research confirmed what I already knew from my own experience as a subcontractor to the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane in Indiana. Locations such as Robins Air Force Base, NSWC Crane, Picatinny Arsenal, and Redstone Arsenal may be involved in some form of prototyping and manufacturing circuit boards and assemblies, but it’s all on a limited scale and meant to support legacy aircraft and weapons.
