Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.
March Madness
From the growing role of AI in design tools to the challenge of managing cumulative tolerances, these articles in this issue examine the technical details, design choices, and manufacturing considerations that determine whether a board works as intended.

Redefining Precision Manufacturing in an EMS Ecosystem: IMI Philippines’ Integrated Approach
April 9, 2026 | IMIEstimated reading time: 2 minutes
As manufacturing in Southeast Asia becomes more and more competitive and technology‑driven, the role of precision engineering has also been evolving beyond traditional machining. In a recent interview with International Metalworking News for Asia, Ashok Parameswaran, Head of Operations at Integrated Microelectronics Inc. (IMI) Philippines, shared how the company is redefining precision machining within an electronics manufacturing services (EMS) environment—positioning the company as a high‑value, integrated manufacturing partner rather than a conventional contract manufacturer.
Precision Manufacturing, A Strategic Capability. According to Parameswaran, precision manufacturing at IMI is no longer viewed as a standalone capability, but as an integral part of a broader, systems‑driven production model. By embedding advanced machining within its electronics manufacturing ecosystem, the company enables tighter process control, higher reliability, and faster response to customer requirements—particularly for complex and long‑lifecycle industrial and automotive applications.
This integrated approach allows IMI Philippines to support customers from early design engagement through scaled production, reducing handoffs between suppliers and minimizing variability across manufacturing stages.
Advanced Machining Integrated with Electronics Manufacturing. The company’s investment in advanced machining technologies complements its core EMS strengths. These capabilities support the production of high‑precision mechanical components, tooling, fixtures, and assemblies that are directly aligned with electronics manufacturing and system integration needs.
By aligning machining operations with electronics processes, IMI shortens lead times, improves dimensional accuracy at the system level, and enables faster engineering iterations—critical advantages as customers push for faster time‑to‑market and higher product reliability.
Automation as an Enabler of Consistency and Scale. In the interview, Parameswaran also highlighted the role of automation in achieving both precision and scalability. More than a mere cost‑reduction tool, IMI leverages automation to improve repeatability, reduce human variability, and enhance process stability across high‑mix, high‑complexity manufacturing environments.
Moving Beyond Traditional Production Models. Parameswaran asserted that IMI’s strategy reflects a broader shift in manufacturing: moving away from volume‑driven, siloed production toward agile, high‑value operations. Such strategy is particularly relevant in Southeast Asia, where manufacturers are increasingly expected to deliver not just labor efficiency, but deep technical competence and end‑to‑end manufacturing solutions.
The company’s ability to merge precision machining, electronics manufacturing, automation, and digital intelligence enables customers to consolidate suppliers, improve quality outcomes, and better manage complex global supply chains.
Supporting Regional and Global Customers. With facilities in the Philippines serving global markets, IMI Philippines plays a critical role in supporting customers across automotive, industrial, power electronics, communications, and medical sectors. The company’s integrated manufacturing model aligns well with customer needs for reliability, traceability, and long product life cycle support—key differentiators in regulated and mission‑critical industries.
Positioned for the Next Phase of Manufacturing. As Southeast Asia accelerates its industrial transformation, Parameswaran emphasized that the intersection of precision engineering, automation, and intelligent systems will define the next chapter of manufacturing competitiveness. IMI’s ongoing investments in these areas manifests its commitment to evolving alongside customer demands and industry expectations.
By redefining precision machining within an EMS framework, IMI Philippines continues to strengthen its position as a trusted manufacturing partner—capable of delivering complex, high‑reliability solutions at global scale.
