Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.
March Madness
From the growing role of AI in design tools to the challenge of managing cumulative tolerances, these articles in this issue examine the technical details, design choices, and manufacturing considerations that determine whether a board works as intended.

SP Manufacturing Expands into UK Avionics Sector, Secures First Customer Engagement
March 30, 2026 | SP ManufacturingEstimated reading time: 1 minute
SP Manufacturing Pte Ltd., a leader in comprehensive electronic manufacturing services, announced its expansion into the avionics sector in the United Kingdom, marked by the successful onboarding of its first UK-based avionics customer.
This milestone reflects the company’s continued growth in the aerospace and defense market, building on its established track record supporting aerospace programs in the United States. The expansion into the UK further strengthens SP Manufacturing’s global presence and its ability to support customers navigating increasingly complex supply chain and regulatory environments.
The avionics sector demands strict adherence to quality, traceability, and reliability standards. SP Manufacturing’s ability to meet these requirements is supported by its compliance with key global certifications, including AS9100D, ISO 9001, UL, RoHS, and IATF 16949.
“Our team put in a lot of effort to make this happen,” Jackson Tan, Global Business Development Director. “We’re excited to be working with our UK avionics customer and look forward to what’s ahead.”
SP Manufacturing works closely with avionics customers to navigate changes in the industry, from digital transformation to new materials and more complex supply chains. As geopolitical and regulatory pressures continue to shape sourcing strategies, the company supports customers with flexible manufacturing options that align with near-shoring, friend-shoring, and global risk mitigation strategies.
With a strategic footprint spanning Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, the United States, Germany, and Poland, SP Manufacturing enables customers to optimize production based on volume, mix, and regional requirements.
The company’s capabilities include complex printed circuit board assembly (PCBA), box builds, and cable harnesses, supporting the increasing complexity of modern aerospace and avionics systems. Its manufacturing model is designed to accommodate the cyclical nature of aerospace programs, with the ability to scale across high-mix, low-volume production environments.
“We’re honored by the trust our new customer has placed in us,” added Tan. “We look forward to building a strong partnership and continuing to deliver high-quality solutions that support the future of aerospace and avionics manufacturing.”

Podcast Hits the Mark in a Materials Market
04/15/2026 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007The base material of a printed circuit board is its literal and functional foundation. Isola, founded in 1912 in Düren, Germany, is one of the longest-standing manufacturers of glass-reinforced laminates in the electronics industry. Originally focused on insulation and fiberglass materials, the company played an early role in supplying the foundational substrates that enabled the growth of PCB technology. As electronics advanced, Isola evolved alongside the industry, expanding from basic glass-epoxy laminates into high-performance copper-clad materials and engineered prepregs.

SMTA Ultra HDI Symposium, Day 1: AI at the Core or Out of the Game
04/13/2026 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007It was a beautiful 81°F morning in Arizona last Wednesday as I headed to the third annual SMTA Ultra HDI Symposium, focused on AI and ultra high density interconnect technology. Strategically held as part of Arizona’s Tech Week, this year’s conference took place in Avondale in Phoenix's West Valley. The event moved from the cozy offices of the Peoria Sports Complex (which paid homage to baseball’s spring training world) to the larger Avondale Conference Center, highlighting the importance of this area for electronics manufacturing investment.
