Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.

Dan’s Biz Bookshelf: Just the Good Stuff: No-BS Secrets to Success
One of the reasons I like Jim VandeHei’s Just the Good Stuff: No-BS Secrets to Success (No Matter What Life Throws at You) is that it’s written in short, to-the-point chapters with, as the title notes, “no BS,” which is how all business books should be written. There is no fluff or wasted words, just a hard-hitting, practical guide for those who want to do more than drift through their career. This book cuts through the noise to what works.
VandeHei—co-founder of Axios and Politico—has built a career on clarity, which is what you get in this book: clarity about success, leadership, relationships, and personal discipline. He delivers straight, actionable, and tested insights. What I love most is that the information is not theoretical. Too many business writers get lost in abstract models and overcomplicated frameworks. VandeHei has walked the walk—building two major media organizations from scratch in brutally competitive environments—and he shares what did and didn’t work. That’s rare and refreshing.
Some of the lessons are deceptively simple: Focus on what matters, own your mornings, protect your energy, hire the right people, tell the truth. But success is often simple. We just make it complicated. Reading this book, you’ll find yourself nodding, underlining, and saying, “Why am I not doing this already?”
One of VandeHei’s major themes is the importance of clarity in communication. He built Axios on the idea that people are drowning in noise, and leaders who cut through that fog win. That also applies to the PCB and electronics industries. Whether you’re pitching a customer, leading a plant, or training a new engineer, clarity always beats complexity.
VandeHei also emphasizes discipline in habits, focus, and relationships. He talks about the daily rituals that separate high performers, and in a way that makes you believe you, too, can adopt them. No excuses, just practical steps. Then there’s the honesty. VandeHei doesn’t sugarcoat the cost of success. He talks openly about failures and hard lessons learned. That’s what makes the book trustworthy. This isn’t a fairy tale; it’s a field manual.
I recommend this book to every manager, leader, and person who wants to do more than just survive in a competitive world. In our industry, where margins are thin and competition is fierce, success comes down to discipline, clarity, and execution, and VandeHei offers you the playbook. This is not simply a business book; it’s a guide to the best way to lead your life, no matter your profession.
Final word: This book is exactly what the title says: Just the good stuff. Buy it, read it, and share it (like I’m doing).
