Dan’s Biz Bookshelf: 'A View from the Top: Moving from Success to Significance'
Once in a while, a book comes along that reminds you why you started down this road of business and leadership. Zig Ziglar’s A View from the Top is that book. It’s not just about business and motivation. It’s about living a life that counts—for your family, your company, your community, and yourself. Ziglar delivers this book in his typical fashion, with the punch of hard-earned wisdom, a bit of humor, and a lot of common sense.
The premise is simple: success without significance isn’t true success. Ziglar argues that your achievements are hollow if they don’t lift others along the way. It’s a message every business leader needs to hear. Too often, we get caught in the scoreboard of quarterly results, market share, and growth curves, forgetting that the real measure of leadership is the impact we leave.
What makes this book so powerful is its practicality. Ziglar both inspires and instructs. He talks about building strong relationships, maintaining integrity, and choosing character over convenience. He lays out, step by step, how to develop habits that not only elevate your business career but also your life. There is no separation. You don’t get to be a scoundrel at home and a hero at the office.
A highlight is his insistence that serving others is the fastest way to the top. That’s counter to much of today’s corporate noise, which celebrates the “me first” mentality. Ziglar proves through stories and examples that influence and success belong to those who help others climb.
The book’s tone is signature Zig—warm, conversational, and encouraging, but with enough challenge to push you out of your chair. He reminds you that every day you wake up is a chance to reset, refocus, and recommit to doing things the right way.
Why should a business leader, especially in our industry, read A View from the Top? Because it centers you. In a business as competitive and technical as printed circuit boards, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. Ziglar pulls you back to what matters: trust, service, integrity, and legacy.
This is more than a business book; it’s a life book. If you want to lead a company that matters, a team that thrives, and a life you’re proud of, then A View from the Top deserves a permanent spot on your desk, not your shelf.
