Built for What’s Next: The End of Flat Thinking

11/05/2026 | Michael Gleason -- Column: Built for What’s Next
Advanced PCB design increasingly brings electrical performance, thermal behavior, mechanical requirements, material selection, and manufacturability into the same conversation. The board sits within a larger physical system, and each decision can influence how that system performs. Looking at those relationships together creates more opportunity to optimize the design as a whole.

In September 2010, a Chinese fishing trawler collided with Japanese Coast Guard vessels near a disputed island chain in the East China Sea. Within weeks, the Chinese government sharply curtailed rare earth exports to Japan, cutting supply by as much as 40 percent. Prices surged, with neodymium oxide rising nearly 1,400 percent. Japanese factories making motors, electronics and defense components had few alternatives. Several began relocating production to mainland China. That was the point. China had weaponized its supply chain to achieve an economic and geopolitical objective.

SMT Perspectives & Prospects: What I Hope the Next Generation Will Carry Forward

11/03/2026 | Dr. Jennie Hwang -- Column: SMT Perspectives and Prospects
As parents and grandparents, we often wonder what we can give the next generation that will matter long after the gifts have been opened and the celebrations have passed. When a child leaves for college, this occasion naturally invites reflection. The older I become, the more I realize that the most meaningful things we can pass on are not possessions, accomplishments, or even answers. I want to offer encouragement, perhaps a few words of wisdom, and some lessons that life has taught me. These are perspectives, ways of thinking, choices to consider, and principles to carry through an ever-changing world.
