Mexico’s Answer to Bypassing the Panama Canal

09/16/2026 | Nolan Johnson, SMT007 Magazine
In 2019, Mexico made a huge step toward economic development by creating the CIIT as a public body to integrate the ports of Coatzacoalcos and Salina Cruz with railway transport and regional development. The decree explicitly describes the project as a logistics platform linking those ports by rail and promoting economic development in the Isthmus. After several significant construction projects, the 308.5 km rail line, the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, began operating in December 2023. For electronics manufacturing, the value is not just the “new railway.”

Honeywell, Boeing and University of Reading to Advance Aircraft-Based Sensing for Contrails

03/23/2026 | Honeywell
Honeywell is collaborating with Boeing and the University of Reading on a project funded by the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) Programme to develop an aircraft-based prototype sensor designed to improve the understanding and mitigation of climate impacts from aircraft creating contrails.

Defense Speak Interpreted: The New Railgun Is Big News, But Can It Work?

02/10/2026 | Dennis Fritz -- Column: Defense Speak Interpreted
Just as I was sitting down to finish this column, President Trump announced two new battleships, each equipped with a railgun. This is not just any railgun; it’s a 32-megajoule, with the same electrical power requirements as I have been reporting to you. Besides that, the battleships will be equipped with laser weapons—again, the ones I discussed in my November column. Both these are electric, not energy-propelled weapons.

Everyone’s Talking About Power

11/06/2025 | Heidi Barnes, Keysight Technologies
Delivering power to a digital load is an AC function, not DC. That simple statement may be obvious, but the implications of how electricity travels to an electronic load are complicated. Dynamic loads with rapidly changing currents create electric and magnetic fields that adhere to Maxwell’s equations. Ground can be misleading and is probably better used for describing where one grows potatoes and carrots. Electrical currents have “return paths,” and the energy is traveling in the fields between the power rail and the return path.
