The Chemical Connection: Employee and Operator Empowerment in the Age of AI

10/04/2026 | Don Ball -- Column: The Chemical Connection
In an ideal world, every operator would understand the process they are working on and be able to diagnose problems and suggest improvements. In the real world, however, we all know that these types of people are, if not rare, at least in the minority. Where do these people fit in when everyone is turning to automation and AI for quality and yield improvements and cost reduction? (Never lose sight of the fact that, in the end, it’s always about the money.) In my opinion, these people are valuable resources, and every effort should be made to retain them, regardless of their education level or seniority.

Powering the Future: What Engineers Get Wrong About Designing for Reliability

09/29/2026 | Brian Buyea -- Column: Powering the Future
One question I hear more than almost any other is: How do I design electronics for high reliability? It’s a fair question. In industries like aerospace, defense, EV, and industrial power, reliability isn’t a feature; it’s the product. When things fail, they don’t just fail quietly. They fail catastrophically, expensively, and sometimes dangerously. The truth is that most reliability problems are not discovered in testing. They are designed in from the very beginning, and that’s where engineers—good engineers—get it wrong.

I-Connect007 Editor’s Choice: Five Must-Reads for the Week

09/25/2026 | Michelle Te, I-Connect007
I recently discovered that the original “Star Trek” debuted in the same month I was born. You can look that up if you want to, but did you know that the series only ran for three years? During that time, however, they produced nearly 30 episodes per season, so there were more than 80 episodes to run through the many years of syndication, as was often the case for me after school: “Brady Bunch” at 4 p.m., “Gilligan’s Island” at 4:30, and then “Star Trek” at 5 p.m. I really tried to be interested in “Star Trek,” but it just felt too corny for me, although I’m not sure how much more “Gilligan’s Island” was rooted in reality.
