The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) released the following statement from SIA President and CEO John Neuffer commending several research awards announced today by the CHIPS Research and Development Office (CRDO) to advance quantum computing technology. The award recipients include SIA member companies IBM and GlobalFoundries.
“Research is the engine of American semiconductor innovation, and today’s awards are a meaningful step toward promoting U.S. strength in the transformative technologies of the future. We commend the Commerce Department for investing in groundbreaking research to secure U.S. leadership in quantum computing. We look forward to working with the Administration to ensure the remaining CHIPS R&D dollars continue to be deployed to sharpen America’s competitive edge in semiconductors and computing.”
Semiconductor R&D is essential for U.S. chip companies to drive innovation and assert their competitiveness on the global stage. The U.S. semiconductor industry invests an average of one-fifth of revenues into R&D annually to advance chip technology. For U.S. semiconductor companies to continue to drive cutting-edge innovation and build the technologies of the future, they also must have reliable access to top-tier talent, strong intellectual property protection, and robust basic science programs to populate the industry’s innovation pipeline.
